Bernwood Forest was part of The Royal Hunting Forest, which covered approximately fifty modern day parishes and received royal protection for over 700 years. Shabbington and Waterperry, the two woods that make up Bernwood Forest are gradually being converted to native broadleaf. In time these areas will revert to Oak woodland with Hazel understory. One of the main priorities is to encourage food plants for the wide variety of common and rare butterflies such as the Purple Emperor which live in the forest.
To revert approximately 2 hectares of 10 year old spruce plantation back to open grassland habitat. This area will then be managed to promote a diverse range of wildflowers to benefit a wide variety of invertebrates, particularly butterflies.
